Spotlight on Lough Cutra

Lough Cutra Castle is one of the most impressive venues we visit—and not just because of the views. Set in the Galway countryside with its own private lake, ancient woodland, and dramatic gothic architecture, this Irish castle brings a real sense of magic to race weekend.

We’ll be back on 24–25 May 2025 for the Triathlon and Multisport Festival, and whether you’re already booked in or still thinking about it, here’s a closer look at the castle behind the course.

Lough Cutra Castle’s story

Built in the early 1800s, Lough Cutra Castle is a gothic revival masterpiece designed by John Nash who is the same architect behind Buckingham Palace. While it may not date back quite as far as some of the other castles in our series, its setting and design make it truly stand out.

Think turrets, towers, battlements and an uninterrupted view across the largest privately owned lake in Europe.

The estate spans over 600 acres and includes everything from formal gardens to native Irish forest. For much of its history, the castle was a private residence and still is—it’s not open to the general public year-round, which makes racing here feel even more special.

During the festival weekend, athletes and spectators get rare access to grounds that are usually off-limits.

There’s something very cool about warming up next to a castle that’s hosted royalty, rockstars, and even political figures over the years. It’s also played host to several international fashion shoots and film productions, although on race day, it’s Lycra, not couture, that takes centre stage.

What it’s like to race at Lough Cutra

If you’re after a race with unforgettable views and a bit of a fairytale feel, Lough Cutra delivers. The swim takes place in the deep, clean waters of the private lough, right in front of the castle. You’ll start with the dramatic backdrop of stone towers and tree-covered slopes—and it just keeps getting better from there.

The cycle route moves out into the quiet rural roads of County Galway, giving you a chance to settle into a rhythm surrounded by peaceful farmland and low hills. On the run, you’ll head into the heart of the estate itself—along wooded trails, past ancient walls, and with the castle visible again as you approach the finish.

It’s a technical and satisfying course, with plenty of variety and natural features. Whether you’re racing sprint, standard or middle distance, there’s a great mix of challenge and scenery.

For spectators, it’s one of the best venues to follow the action, with plenty of space around the castle lawn and a lively event village right in the centre.

A castle with culture and character

One of the best things about Lough Cutra Castle is how well it blends the old with the new. Yes, it’s a stately home with serious historical clout, but it also feels fresh, welcoming and alive. The family who live here now have opened it up for events like ours, and they’ve done it in a way that still protects its privacy and charm.

The castle has featured in everything from editorial fashion campaigns to off-the-radar celebrity retreats. While it’s not the kind of place you’ll see on every tourism list, that low profile is part of the appeal. If you like the idea of racing somewhere that feels like a bit of a hidden gem, this is it.

Lough Cutra also taps into Ireland’s strong triathlon community. There’s a loyal local turnout, and every year we see more international athletes making the trip over to be part of it. It might feel like a quiet corner of the west coast, but the race buzz here is anything but low-key.

What makes Lough Cutra such a unique race venue?

Lough Cutra has all the ingredients for an unforgettable race weekend: castle, lake, forest, open roads and an atmosphere that’s hard to beat. The fact that it’s a private estate gives the whole event a relaxed, exclusive feel.

You’re not jostling for space with day-trippers or public tourists. Instead, you’re part of a focused, well-organised race weekend where every detail is about the race.

The layout of the course means that all three disciplines get their moment. The swim is clean and calm, the bike leg is fast but not without its hills, and the run is scenic with some great views coming back in. And because everything centres around the castle lawn, there’s a great sense of togetherness between athletes, supporters and volunteers.

Add in the friendly Irish welcome, the scenic drive out from Galway City, and the post-race celebrations (yes, there’s always great food and live music), and you’ve got the full package.

Make it a trip to remember

If you’re coming from further afield, Lough Cutra is a brilliant excuse to turn race weekend into a longer break. The castle is around 45 minutes from Galway City, and close to some of the most stunning spots on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Many of our athletes make a weekend of it—staying nearby in Gort, Kinvara or the Burren, and exploring the coast once the race is done. There’s great walking, sea swimming, traditional pubs and plenty of family-friendly options too. It’s well worth sticking around for an extra day or two if you can.
