Taking on a full iron-distance triathlon is a huge step — one that demands preparation, commitment, and a whole lot of heart. The coaches at Tri Training Harder, one of the UK’s leading triathlon coaching providers, share their expert advice to help you decide: am I ready to take on The Bastion in 2026?

On Sunday, 7th June 2026, the Castle Race Series brings the legendary Bastion Full Iron to the stunning Château de Chantilly in northern France – less than an hour from Paris.
This course is fast, flat, and scenic, winding through breathtaking countryside and offering the ultimate test of endurance. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or aiming to cross your very first full-distance finish line, The Bastion promises an unforgettable experience.
It might sound obvious, but asking yourself why you want to race The Bastion is the most important question of all.
“I just thought it sounded cool” might get you through the first few training sessions, but it won’t carry you through 140.6 miles. When things get tough – and they will – your motivation will be what keeps you moving forward.
Maybe it’s about proving something to yourself, raising money for a cause, or simply seeing what you’re capable of. Whatever your reason, make it personal and powerful.

Here’s the truth: anyone can finish The Bastion with the right mindset, plan, and effort.
But it’s crucial to be honest about where you’re starting from. Endurance fitness is different from general fitness — being a great CrossFitter or sprinter doesn’t necessarily prepare you for the long hours of swim, bike, and run that a full iron demands.
If you’ve already tackled the Castle Race Series Gauntlet (half iron distance), then you’re halfway there. With about six months of focused training, you can safely and steadily build toward The Bastion.
Training for a full iron-distance race is more than just a hobby — it’s a lifestyle shift.
While some athletes can “wing” a 70.3 and still finish strong, that won’t cut it for The Bastion. Preparing properly means long rides, early mornings, tired evenings, and weekends structured around training blocks and recovery.
You’ll need to consider:
How much time can you realistically dedicate each week?
Do you have the support of your family and friends?
Are you ready to prioritise rest and recovery as much as the training itself?
Balancing training with life’s other commitments is part of the challenge and part of what makes finishing The Bastion so rewarding.

If you’ve got the motivation, a solid fitness base, and the commitment to train consistently, then you’re ready to take on The Bastion Full Iron.
With its flat, fast course and stunning backdrop at Château de Chantilly, it’s an ideal race for first-timers and experienced athletes alike. And with the Castle Race Series team and Tri Training Harder coaches supporting you all the way, you’ll be in the best possible hands.
