Behind every fundraising effort for Alzheimer’s Research UK, there is a personal story. For many supporters, it’s about love, loss, hope, and the determination to create a better future for others. Katie’s story is one of those powerful reminders of why supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK and awareness is so important.

Katie always had a close and loving relationship with her dad, Ceri — an Oxford University professor who was sociable, funny, and deeply loved by his family. When he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the news was devastating for Katie and her family.
Katie said: “I was always extremely close to my dad… After his diagnosis, I found losing these wonderful parts of him, bit by bit, extremely difficult.” For many families affected by dementia, this gradual change is one of the hardest parts of the disease, as Alzheimer’s slowly takes away pieces of the person you know and love.
Rather than letting grief define her family’s story, Katie chose to turn it into something positive. She now shares her dad’s story to help break the stigma around dementia and encourage others to take action.
After Ceri passed away with Alzheimer’s, Katie began supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK through running, raising more than £20,000 by completing four marathons. She said: “Because Dad was a researcher – research was his big thing – we thought, as a family, that’s the best thing to support. It made us determined to raise awareness and funds for dementia research so we can get closer to a cure.”

Stories like Katie’s highlight why supporting Alzheimer’s charities is so important. Dementia affects millions of families worldwide, and funding research helps scientists better understand the disease, develop treatments, and move closer to a cure.
But beyond the science, fundraising also builds a powerful sense of community. As Katie says, “Volunteering and fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK is like being part of a family… it has helped me process my feelings and honour Dad’s memory.” Her story shows how fundraising can turn loss into hope.
