When personal passion meets a powerful cause, extraordinary things can happen. For professional triathlete Callum Stedman, this year’s Castle Race Series event at Belvoir Castle is more than just a race—it’s a heartfelt tribute to his nan, Vivienne, who lived with Alzheimer’s disease.
As he takes on the challenge of a Half Ironman “Gauntlet” for the first time, Callum is also raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, the official National Charity Partner of the series.
Professional triathlete Callum Stedman is tackling the Belvoir Castle Triathlon this July to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
This challenge is especially meaningful for Callum, who is racing in memory of his beloved nan, Vivienne.
The Castle Race Series’ partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK made this the perfect opportunity for him to honour her memory while pushing his limits in the sport he loves.
Callum grew up very close to his nan, who he describes as “like a second mum.” They shared a strong bond, having lived together during his childhood.
When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 14, Callum watched the disease slowly change someone he cherished. “Watching someone you love slowly disappear was very upsetting,” he recalls.
That experience left a lasting impact, motivating him to support vital dementia research.
Callum has selected the Belvoir Castle Festival for his race, an event that holds special meaning to him beyond fundraising. Located on one of his regular cycling training routes, the Leicestershire venue feels like home turf.
He’s chosen to take on the challenging half Ironman “Gauntlet” distance—his first time at this level—with a 1.9km-mile swim, 90km bike, and 21km run. It’s a test he’s eager to face, both physically and emotionally.
As the National Charity Partner of the Castle Race Series, Alzheimer’s Research UK leads the charge in fighting dementia.
Callum’s efforts not only honour his nan but also shine a spotlight on the importance of funding research for a cure. “A cure is so important—it means others won’t have to experience what my family did,” Callum says. Every donation fuels pioneering research and brings us one step closer to that future.
You can join Callum and many others by signing up to race for Alzheimer’s Research UK at one of the Castle Race Series events across the UK and France.
Charity race places are available at multiple distances—from short multisport events to the formidable Bastion Full Iron Distance.
Whether it’s your first race or your next big challenge, your effort can help transform the lives of people affected by dementia.
Can’t race? You can still support Alzheimer’s Research UK by donating or fundraising. Every contribution helps power cutting-edge research into treatments and, one day, a cure for dementia.
As Callum puts it, “I’m doing this so fewer people have to go through what my nan and my family did.” Let’s stand with Callum—and with everyone affected—by making a difference today.
