Cholmondeley 2026 Race Report
24.06.26

Cholmondeley Castle — what a venue. The perfect setting and an unforgettable backdrop for every finisher's run to the line. It was a hot weekend, but our athletes took it all in their stride. From our youngest competitors and first-time racers to returning athletes taking on the course once again, every single participant brought incredible determination and spirit. It was fantastic to see so many of you out on course, and we can't wait to welcome you back to Cholmondeley Castle next year!

DAY ONE

SUN, SPLASH AND STRIDE

The Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon and Multisport Festival got underway at 08:00 in glorious conditions, with Sprint Plus athletes leading the first wave into the water. They were followed by Sprint, Super Sprint and Starter Sprint competitors, alongside Duathlon, Aquathon and Aquabike events, creating a fantastic morning of multisport action.

One of the weekend’s most inspiring moments came from Bailey Matthews, who completed the event for an incredible 11th consecutive year. Bailey has cerebral palsy — and he is a force of nature. Year after year, he takes to the course and reminds every single person watching why this sport matters.

MORE THAN JUST A SWIM

As the afternoon unfolded, the lake took centre stage for the open water swim series. With the water reaching a welcoming 22°C, conditions were ideal for competitors tackling the 5K, 2.5K and 1 Mile distances. Whether chasing endurance, personal bests or a first open water challenge, every swimmer embraced the course with determination.

Nature added its own twist, with a few shallow sections providing an extra challenge along the way. Congratulations to all who took the plunge and completed their swim in another memorable afternoon at Cholmondeley Castle.

The Future of Triathlon

At 13:30, it was time for the juniors to take centre stage, with many competing as part of the Triathlon England North West Junior Series. The racing got underway with the draft-legal 15–16-year-olds, followed 30 minutes later by the 13–14-year-olds and then the 11–12-year-olds, each wave bringing plenty of excitement and determination to the course.

Every junior who raced today should be immensely proud. Whether it was your first triathlon or your tenth, standing on that start line takes courage, commitment and confidence. Keep training, keep believing, and keep enjoying the journey—the future of triathlon is looking incredibly bright.

Teamwork Takes Centre Stage

The Mixed Team Relay got underway at 15:00, bringing Saturday’s racing to an exciting close. The atmosphere was electric as triathlon clubs and teams battled around the course, with each athlete completing a 250m swim, 4.2-mile bike and 1.5-mile run before handing over to their teammate.

The relay is always one of the highlights of the weekend, showcasing incredible teamwork, determination and club spirit. With supporters lining the course and cheering every transition, the energy was infectious. A huge congratulations to Newcastle Tri Club Sharks, who stormed to victory in an impressive 1:38:00, providing the perfect finale to an unforgettable day of racing.

DAY TWO

1.9 | 84 | 21.1

A demanding 1,900m swim, 84km bike and 21.1km run – The Gauntlet – pushed our races through one of the toughest challenges of the weekend. The exciting Australian exit added extra drama to the swim, delighting spectators as competitors ran from the water before diving back in.

With temperatures rising early, conditions tested every athlete from start to finish. Congratulations to everyone who conquered the course, and a special mention to Mike and Katherine, whose outstanding performances secured the overall male and female victories in unforgettable style.

The Olympic wave heats up

The competition was really hotting up – quite literally – as the Olympic distance race got underway at 10:00. With temperatures continuing to climb, athletes faced not only a challenging course but the added test of racing in the summer heat. The atmosphere around the lake was buzzing as competitors took on the 1,500m swim, 42km bike and 10km run, each pushing themselves to the limit in pursuit of a strong finish.

Spectators lined the course, creating an incredible atmosphere and spurring athletes on every step of the way.

Endurance in Every Event

The day’s multisport action began with the Middle Distance Duathlon, where athletes tackled a demanding 10K run, 56K bike and a final 10K run to test both speed and endurance. Thirty minutes later, the Standard Distance Duathlon competitors took to the course, adding even more excitement as the racing intensified.

As the day unfolded, attention turned to the Aquabike and Aquathlon events, offering competitors the chance to showcase their strengths across swim-bike and swim-run disciplines. From seasoned athletes chasing personal bests to those taking on a new challenge, every event delivered determination, grit and plenty of memorable performances.

Marathon Moments & Milestones

The run series rounded off the weekend with the marathon, half marathon and 10K drawing fantastic fields despite the hot conditions. A huge congratulations to Jaime, who claimed marathon victory in an impressive 2:54 while completing his remarkable 131st marathon—a truly extraordinary achievement.

We also celebrate Louise, who tackled the 10K while raising vital funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. From front-runners to first-time participants, every runner showed incredible determination on a challenging course. Thank you to everyone who laced up their trainers, embraced the hills and crossed the finish line with pride.

Young Athletes Set the Pace

Our juniors took the limelight, kicking off the day’s racing at 14:00! They tackled the course with impressive speed, determination, and enthusiasm, giving their all from start to finish. Their hard work and team spirit made for a fantastic opening to the event.

There were some brilliant performances across the age groups. William, representing Chorley Athletic and Triathlon Club, claimed victory in the 9–10 category, while Bolton Tri Club celebrated gold in the 11–12 race, with Chloe racing to a well-deserved first-place finish. Congratulations to all our young athletes for an outstanding display of talent and effort!
