Castle Howard 2022 Race Report
25.07.22

On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 23rd July, thousands of athletes of all ages and all abilities took part in a weekend of triathlon, multisport, run and swim racing at Castle Howard, North Yorkshire...

Athletes (and their spectators!) travelled from around the country for a weekend in the sun (minus the small Sunday afternoon downpour), filled with swim, bike and run.

Swimmers enjoyed exclusive access to Castle Howard’s Great Lake with stunning views of the Castle. Cyclists endured undulating routes through the Howardian Hills. Runners were rewarded with a sprint finish right outside the main doors of this epic house. Many athletes completing triathlons enjoyed all three!

Castle Howard is an incredible place to race, made even more special by loud and loyal supporters and marshals dotted around the course.

The weekend kicked off with a full day of Sprint distances across all multisport disciplines – triathlon, duathlon, aquabike and aquathlon. These shorter races suit athletes who love to go flat out, are recovering from an injury, are building up their stamina or are brand new to the sport. We love to see the incredible mix of ages and abilities out of the courses!

Just before lunch, hundreds of swimmers made their way across the stunning Great Lake, taking on our 5K, 2.5K or 1 mile course.

9-12 year old triathletes completed their course with so many of our team in awe of their speed and super sleek cycle dismounts!

Sunday saw The Gauntlet athletes complete the half iron triathlon distance (1.9k swim, 90k cycle, 21k run) and middle and standard distance triathletes, duathletes, aquathletes complete their distances.

Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K runners set off in their droves to complete their allocated laps of the grounds and surrounding countryside.

The juniors – this time 13-16 year olds – continued to impress the crowds as they took on their triathlon distances throughout the afternoon.

Notable performances came from…

  • Gauntlet Triathlon – Dan Harbidge (04:35:49) and Francesca Ryde (05:03:57).
  • Standard Duathlon – Andrew Kaufman (02:30:34) and Mel Evans (03:01:31).
  • Standard Aquathlon – Damian Cole (01:07:55) and Lorna Wrigley (01:14:04).

Speaking about the event Race Director Brian Adcock said “Our 12th event at Castle Howard was bigger and better than ever. The festival village was buzzing with a constant stream of athletes celebrating their finish line moment, live music, food, drink and shopping stalls. We were even treated to an epic military flypast. I was once again so proud of our dedicated crew who make sure their event runs smoothly and the fantastic crowds of spectators giving athletes the extra motivation to complete the tough courses. Thank you to all the athletes who raced this weekend, the variety of ages and abilities continues to drive us to deliver fantastic weekends that celebrate getting out and getting active.”

The spectacular setting of the lake and grounds at Castle Howard provided the perfect backdrop for a superb weekend of racing. The fantastic weather and festival atmosphere made it a fantastic day out in North Yorkshire. We hope to see you next year!
