Lough Cutra Castle 2023 Race Report
29.05.23

After an incredibly sunny and successful 10 years of racing at Lough Cutra Multisport Festival last year, we returned back to Galway for our 11th edition!

A WEEKEND OF EXTRAORDINARY RACING IN GALWAY!

We returned to the Castle to host a series of triathlon, multisport, swim and run races, and it did not disappoint! The sunshine returned again for another year and it was deeply appreciated!

We saw athletes from across Ireland, the UK and Europe join us in Galway for a fantastic race weekend! From complete beginners to former Olympians were in attendance taking part in various races. Athletes had the pleasure of swimming in the privately owned lake, conquering the scenic bike course of South Galway and the Burren in County Clare before taking to the enchanting trails of the Estate grounds to finish at the front door of the Castle. If you weren’t there, you really missed out!

DAY ONE - 27 MAY

We kicked the Saturday programme off with the Sprint Plus and Sprint Triathlon. The Sprint included the 16-17 youth racers, definately ones to look out for in future years! The programme was then followed by Sprint Aquathlon, Aquabike and Duathlon events.

This year we welcomed TI’s Aquathlon Sprint Championships to the programme! Well done to Aquathlon champion Jack Kennedy! It was an impressible finish!

Next up were the Super and Starter Sprint Triathlons. It was fantastic to see so many first time triathletes race with us, so we thank you!

In the afternoon all eyes were down at the lake for Swim Series races, and then the Triathlon Ireland Mixed Team Relay Championships!

Athletes raced their hearts out! It was close for top spot but well done to winners Limerick Tri Club, an incredible effort! The Mixed Relay is an event we hold dear to us and it can only get bigger and better every year!

DAY TWO - 28 MAY

Sunday morning, another day of fun filled racing!

Early morning saw our half iron triathletes, the Gauntlets, take to the water! David Higgins took top spot with a time of 04:29:01! Well done to all Gauntlets! Followed behind them were the Olympic distance athletes. The Standard winners were Darren Mooney and Gillian Heavey.

The mid morning then saw the start of standard distance Aquathlon, Aquabike and Duathlon events. Well done to all those that took part in our multisport events, your hard work and dedication to the two disciplines is admirable!

Well done to Aquabike winners Eoin Healy and Laura Byrne!

The Run Series began in the afternoon with runners taking on a Marathon, Half Marathon or 10k around the Castle grounds. Congrats to Andrew Coen and Jenny Elliott York on winning the marathon!

JUNIOR WINNERS!

The Costcutter Youth Series was a true spectacle in the programme this year!  Athletes aged from 9-15 raced their hearts out swimming, biking and running to the finish line! The support was epic from families and friends who cheered them on in front of the castle.

Roxanne Sands and Victor Topalov took the 11-12 years titles, while Liam O’Driscoll and Lara Buck were the 14-15 winners! What great races they were!

Well done to all juniors who took part this past weekend! We are proud of all of you and we hope your journey in triathlon and multisport is a pleasant one!

A HUGE THANK YOU!

Race Director Brian Adcock said “This year at Lough Cutra proved yet again why it is a jewel in the Castle Race Series crown. The racing was phenomenal, the atmosphere was second to none and support from you all was really appreciated!  Thank you to the team, the volunteers, Susie and the Castle, the spectators and most importantly the athletes who raced! This event wouldn’t be possible without you all! We are already looking forward to 2024, and we can’t wait to see you all again soon.”
