Castle Howard 2023 Race Report

On Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd July, the beautiful and historical Castle Howard played host to yet another spectacular Castle Race Series Triathlon and Multisport Festival!

A weekend full of surprises!

The weather certainly did not dampen spirits in Yorkshire as over 3000 athletes swam, bike and ran across the finish line. Athletes as young as 9 to as old as 80 took part over the two days. Let’s see how they got on…

DAY ONE - 22 JULY

We kicked off the race weekend with our Sprint Plus with athletes taking to the glorious Howard Great lake at 9am. Shortly followed by our Sprint, Super Sprint and Starter tri.

Huge congrats to Sprint Plus winners Philip Cornforth and Johanna Koehler.

For many athletes, this was their first event and we are thrilled that so many of you chose us to start your triathlon journey! Congratulations to our Starter Tri winners Islay Wilson and Thomas Wood! A tremendous effort!

SATURDAY MULTISPORT, SWIM AND JUNIORS

Our Saturday Multisport events were well received as many took part in our Sprint Duathlon, Aquathlon and Aquabike.

Well done to Duathlon Sprint winners Dan Tate and Erin Bush! A huge well done to Aquathlon Sprint winners Ross Hutchinson  and Niamh Murphy!

Congrats to all Swim Series athletes who conquered the Great Lake! Winners for the 5K were Rebecca Thornton and Oliver Conlon (Wetsuits) and Emma Tune and Sean BURLEIGH (non-wetsuits).

We concluded Saturday with our younger Junior races. All athletes put their heart and soul into their races! Solomon COFFEY-WILLS and Lottie Hall  took first place in the 9-10 years and Daniel Shipton and Shauna Hamilton were 11-12 years winners!

DAY TWO - 23 JULY

Unfortunately, due to extremely poor weather, we had to make the decision to cancel the bike element for all adult races. Our Half Iron athletes, The Gauntlets were the first to cross the start line. It is a fierce distance and we commend all those who take part! Congratulations to our Gauntlet winners Thomas Sargeant and Charlotte Dalton!

Our Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k runners set off in the afternoon as they battled to complete  laps of the Castle estate and scenic countryside.

Our older junior races (13-16 years) ended the proceedings at Castle Howard. The youngsters  impressed the crowds as they took on their triathlon distances throughout the afternoon. Well done to winners in the Jacob Palmer and Roxie TWIDALE in the 13-14 years!

OLYMPIC TRIATHLON EUROPEAN QUALIFIER

Sunday morning also saw over 500 athletes take part in the Standard/Olympic distance triathlon. The race was a British Triathlon qualifier for the European Championships! Regardless of the cancel of the cycle discipline, British Triathlon have confirmed that the qualifier will stand for the Championships.

Well done to all athletes who qualified and to all those who took part!

A FEW WORDS FROM BRIAN

Our Race Director Brian Adcock said “Castle Howard was a success!  The weather certainly didn’t stop us hosting another fantastic event! The event village was electric with celebrating athletes as they made their way across the finish line, live music, food, drink and activities! Our crew and marshals pulled out all the stops for this event and I am incredibly grateful to each and every single one of them. Thank you to all the athletes who raced this weekend, and to all their supporters on the sidelines. It is all not possible without you! We can’t wait to be back!”
